Does the Bible Justify Slavery?
A Brief Answer
Slave = Servant = Employee
Atheist websites severely misinterpret the bible because they lack understanding. There is a huge difference between chattel slavery and regular indentured servant hood. Before corporations and retail stores and government jobs were invented, what were you supposed to do for work if you don’t own land? Servant hood was a form of employment in those days… Slavery was just a term that was used for it.
Slavery was also a form of bankruptcy. When you had a debt you coudnt pay, you became a slave temporarily. Some people became permanent slaves willingly, and some people became permanent slaves from becoming captured in war.
We are all “slaves” to our employers for 8 hours or whatever your agreement with your employer is. The agreements in those days were a lot simpler than they are now.
Pre-Industrial Economics 101
First you have to understand what was the economy like in those days… There was minimal division of labor, and little technology, so most of the earth worked in agriculture, and worked to eat. That means if you didn’t own land, being an indentured servant aka slave was a major form of employment. Then you have to look up “chattel” slavery… It was a different form of slavery based on RACISM, that was practiced on Africans.
Step-by-Step
Another thing you have to realize is the purpose of the laws in the Hebrew culture. It was not to create a utopia. The purpose was to create a spiritually progressive nation that would influence other nations and be a conduit for the Messiah. God does His will step by step.
Exodus 21 is not Gods manual for utopia, it’s God giving slaves dignity under the law in a time where in most nations, slaves could be killed with no punishment at all. Exodus 21 was actually a major upgrade from what was normal at that time. For more read here.
Sex Slavery
Also the sex slavery thing was completely made up. The scripture is basically just saying to treat the woman you marry right, even if she started out as your servant. Its basically saying if you marry your employee, you can’t treat her less than your wife. That’s the OPPOSITE spirit of the chattel slavery that was practiced on Africans.
What You Believe is Based on Your Character
Proverbs 17
4 A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips;
and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.
People that believe atheist lies believe them because they love sin and pride. People with good hearts will eventually learn how to find the knowledge of God.
Atheists will blame greedy hypocrite fake Christians for slavery (there have always been fake hypocrite Christians twisting the bible for their own gain – the Bible itself warns us about them)… but atheists won’t tell you that most abolitionists were real Christians (humble Christians that lived holy and ministered to the poor).
They also won’t tell you the full title of Darwin’s Origin of Species: “On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life.”
Guess who those “favored races” were. Darwinism and evolution was basically a flawed science experiment to try to prove that white people were better than everyone else. Eugenicists then used it as justification for genocides, forced sterilization, holocausts, abortions, and all types of long term evil.
