Christian Hip Hop or Christian Rap?

Hip Hop vs Rap

2 Timothy 2:14
Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.

I don’t often get into the whole hip-hop versus rap debate, because it’s a quarrel about words, and often ends up being a waste of time. When someone wants to strive & argue about words without a clear definition of those words, they are not trying to help you – they are trying to subvert you, i.e. destroy your identity.

Let’s seek knowlege and understanding, and end the debates, so we can focus on Christ.

Simple Facts and History

Where did the word “hip hop” come from?

The etymology of the word hip hop extends from two different words.

“Hip” is a word that means cool, current, and in the know. That word has been used since 1898.

“Hop” is a movement that takes energy to lift your feet from the ground.

The term “hop” has also been used to denote a party with dancing.

Everybody’s heard the Christmas song: “Rocking around, the Christmas tree at the Christmas party hop” is a song written in 1958, by Brenda Lee.

The actual music & expression was originated by a DJ, Kool Herc in 1973. All it was was a dj spinning a party, and deciding to repeat the breakbeat on 2 records instead of just spinning one. This, plus his rhythmic microphone talking a.k.a. rapping made it easier for people to dance.

A few years later, Zulu Nation “Culture” was originated by Afrikan Baambata… who was a gangster who liked the way DJ Kool Herc remixed music. He switched his gang from crime to music in 1975 when he started djing.

Hip Hop in the business was originated by promoters and businessmen in the late 1970’s. The phrase “hip-hop” was coined by a rapper from the Sugar Hill Gang on the widely promoted song “Rapper’s Delight” in 1979. This is where the word “hip-hop” became its own term.

Hip Hop the religion was originated by KRS one in the late 1990s. He made it up.

All these men are still alive as of today. But which one originated the actual music? If you look at a calendar, the originator was obviously DJ Kool Herc. For the originator (not the followers), it was just a new way to mix music and motivate the crowd at a party. The actual term “hip hop” was just two separate words that were put together by a rapper to describe the new form of party music.

Understand this: there is no sin in inventiveness, creativity, technology, or in the spirit of wisdom. These things come from God.

However there is sin in joining with idolatry, the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life.

Babylon’s Confusion vs Kingdom Accuracy

So why is hip hop called so many different things? Is it a gang, a culture, a business, a religion? Or is it just music and expression? Does it even matter?

Babylon is all about confusion, and men trying subvert others. I’m more concerned about teaching people how to be “Christian” – whatever they call their music. Teaching people how to really follow Christ is my goal.

Because you could call your music the so called “right thing” and still be wrong as the doctrine of Jezebel or the error of Balaam. You could have the right title and still be a syncretistic idol worshipper presenting Jesus as one god among many. What’s more important is to teach people how to worship God in Spirit and in Truth.

If someone says: “I hate hip hop, I only do Christian rap!” But they still copy the world, they still follow the doctrine of Jezebel and Balaam, they still won’t serve or support their church financially, they still want fame and a record deal with Babylon, and they still want to buy & sell and promote their books, cds, dvds, brands, etc. in the church (which is supposed to be a house of prayer)… Then what’s the point? They are no different than the world system, even if they grabbed the so called “right title.” There is no spiritual profit.

All the zeal, passion, and conviction in the world, without the passion to seek the knowledge that goes along with it…. can be very unfruitful. God is sending out sharp arrows not random buck shots.

In other words, if you are arguing between the words hip hop & rap, you’re in the wrong argument! Instead of worrying about hip hop vs rap let’s define what a “Christian” is!

Sight Reading vs Phonics

A newer way to teach children to read is sight reading. It gets quicker results and quicker confidence because it teaches children to look at pictures and words and memorize them.

However, in the long run, teaching children phonics – which is how to break words into pieces and sound them out- produces better readers. The shortcut is easier but the fundamental method produces stronger results.

In the same way, it’s better to teach someone concepts from the Word of God and give them permanent building blocks of understanding than try to have them “sight read” based on debatable concepts. Sight reading can get quicker results, but also can cause fundamental understanding to be lacking.

Shortcuts to Holiness don’t Last Long

In the same way we could get quick results by teaching people that TV is demonic and was invented by a Satan Worshipper. Whoever believed you and threw away their TV would probably benefit greatly from it. They would be smarter, less covetous and lustful, and their family would communicate better.

However, even though it would benefit the person that believed it, that doesn’t make it necessarily true. It’s better to teach people in truth and from the heart how to limit or eliminate their television viewing based on the Word of God and the Holy Spirit.

Truth that is implemented from understanding and from the heart usually stands the test of time. The Word that is implemented without solid understanding can be easily stolen or lost in tribulation (Mark 4).

Let’s not lose focus on Jesus Christ.

Don’t get caught up in unfruitful and questionable arguments with people whose goal is to subvert you with zeal. Just be a true minister of the Word of God and the purity of Jesus Christ.

Romans 10:2
2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.

Proverbs 19:2
2 Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.

Do Not Be Unequally Yoked Together with Unbelievers

When you partner with unbelievers to do ministry, eventually unbelievers will control, corrupt, and steal from the ministry.

Doesn’t matter if it’s Church, Music, or “Christian” TV. That’s why God said to “be not unequally yoked.”

He didn’t say “chase platforms chase fame chase money in my name just mention me and it’ll be okay.”

My opinion on the “Disobedient Cowards” Panel Comments on Holy Hip Hop

My opinion is the panelists were right, they just didn’t see clearly enough to show HOW they were right.

The bible says “If a ruler hearkens to lies, all his servants are wicked.”

Unfortunately, leadership by example in “holy hip hop” is corrupted and following after the world… and that has painted the whole movement as “disobedient cowards.” Unfortunately, the majority of holy hip hop is scared to stand against the world and against the disobedient cowards that are leading the body of Christ into the world.

The genre is not evil, but people that follow corrupt leadership within the genre are. Some people that stand against corrupt leadership have kept themselves from evil. However, they are the minority, so to the panelists who don’t see the minority, it’s all evil.

They were correct in their assessment of the overall state of holy hip hop or reformed rap or gospel rap.

So the panelists were actually accurate… but just didn’t have the insight to know exactly why they were accurate. Probably because they are not intimately familiar with what they were asked about.

There’s a such thing as being right by perspective and wrong by logic. Sometimes a prophetically gifted person can get it right with his gift, but not yet have all the scriptures and logic together correctly to prove why he’s accurate.

I don’t they should recant their opinions… I think they should dig a little deeper to find out more why this issue is so strong on the heart of God for the next generation.

I wrote the book Killing Idols for REVIVAL to bring the scriptures, prophetic perspective, and real life experience together on this topic among many others. I highly recommend reading Killing Idols for REVIVAL.

REACHING THE CULTURE? Or TRANSLATING THE GOSPEL and Creating a HOLY CULTURE?

This video is beautiful, it illustrates the scriptural difference between compromising with the culture and translating the WORD into the language of the culture. Trust me you will not be disappointed by the end of this video. It almost brought tears to my eyes.

Can’t say I agree with everything but the overall point is what I’ve been teaching and living for 15 years –

Kingdom OVER Culture:

That if we see hip hop (or any cultural expression) as a language to translate the gospel of Jesus Kingdom into, and create holy lifestyles – we will be fruitful.

If we see hip hop (or any other cultural expression) as a culture to submit to or join in and follow after just to reach people, we are in spiritual failure.

Its not about how you express or what you call it, its about what you express (SCRIPTURES), and who you express it with (THE HOLY SPIRIT)!

This amazing video message shows you a few of the scriptures that support this DIFFERENTIATION, and a real life example of the DIFFERENCE. Trust me this is amazing, especially the Papua New Guinea testimony.

What’s the Point In Holding Word Ministers and Gospel Singers Accountable?

What’s the Point In Holding Word Ministers and Gospel Singers Accountable?

I mean, we’re all just human, right?

The point is that when holy music isn’t holy, and is not lived in a holy life, it is corrupted and leads to corrupt lives and corrupt fruit, and causes corruption throughout the Body of Christ.

James says be not many masters for they shall receive Greater Damnation because they cause many to stumble from obedience.

The point is also that false prophets come in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are hungry wolves, so beware.

We don’t hold leaders accountable out of anger for them, but out of care and protection for the people they influence, and their own eternal souls.

Another point is that ministry is not for actors, its for servants. So when we follow actors, we end up like them instead of like Jesus Christ. The next generation is impacted.

But the main point of all is that if we love Jesus, we must embrace the Spirit of Elijah to restore all things. Jesus is coming back for a Bride without spot, wrinkle, or blemish, and holiness hastens His return. So if we really love Jesus and want Him back soon, we PROTEST those things that are anti-Christ, and substitutes for Christ.

BIBLICAL TOOLS SO YOU Can Teach and Discern “Pharisees” Hypocrisy vs Holiness

Biblical tools so that you can Teach and Discern Holiness vs Hypocrisy and “Pharisees”

Aren’t you tired of people seeing a stand for God’s Holiness and calling it “Pharisee,” then seeing iniquity, and disobedience and calling it “grace?”

Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

People are quick to call you a “pharisee” if you desire to walk in holiness and obey God beyond the stage performance.

But let’s take a look at what our real king – Jesus Christ – said about the “Pharisee” problem. Will the real Pharisees please stand up?

(Hint: its the covetous actors.)
The leaven of the Pharisees is not Holiness. What is holiness?

Holiness is beautiful to God. Holiness is separation to his purpose and unto him alone. It’s sanctification. It helps start the dawning of a new powerful day in God’s Kingdom. Holiness is especially beautiful among youth

Psalms 110

3 Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.

The Leaven of the Pharisees is Hypocrisy and Covetousness

Pharisees are actors in real life who are excellent at making money for saying the word while not doing it.

Luke 12 In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

2 For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.

3 Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light; and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.

4 And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

Notice when Jesus chose to instruct HIS disciples to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees. It was when the crowd got so big that they started to trample one another. When the crowd got big the first and most important thing on Jesus heart was that His true disciples were wary of the temptation to become an actor like the Pharisees were. When crowds get big, that’s when wolves put their masks on. That’s when actors start to perform for cash instead of obey God.
The Pharisees thought that since they were good actors, God would keep their sin secret like some type of government or corporate organization would.

But Jesus said that there is nothing hidden that would not be revealed

Pharisees are also excellent at making money by doing things that look good on the outside to man but are abomination to God
Luke 16 13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

14 And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him.

15 And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

The Pharisees were covetous and knew how to make themselves look good to men, but the things they did were an abomination to God.

Jesus is the instructions to his disciples regarding Pharisees was: to do exactly what they say because they are really good at saying the word. But He also said “Do NOT do what they do” because they are actors, they are faking it.

Pharisees do know certain parts of the Word, and it really does take a lot of talent, authority, and intelligence to be a really good hypocrite.

But according to Jesus Christ, the leaven of the Pharisees is hypocrisy, not holiness. Hypocrites are those who are good at saying the word but not doing it. They are talented actors. Jesus instructs HIS disciples to do what they say (of course if they can quote a couple scriptures), but NOT do what they do. Therefore you can choose to follow the actors that know how to say the right things while they spread corruption, OR you can follow Jesus. Pharisees are the ones who love to act the part but can’t bear their cross and obey God in holiness. Pharisees are not the ones that preach repentance and live holiness.

When you decide that you are smart enough to lead God’s people by talent instead of by example, you are a hypocrite and God starts the process to make an example out of you.

Matthew 23 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,

2 Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:

3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
Jesus requires his disciples to be good at doing it not just at saying it.

James 1

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

What is Leaven?

Leaven is the yeast that fills up the whole body like a yeast infection, or a piece of bread.

Pharisees don’t spread holiness or the gospel.
Pharisees spread hypocrisy and spread covetousness and the love of money

Hypocrisy and Covetousness is what they spread through the Body of Christ if you don’t beware.

A Pharisee is not the one who advocates for holiness and separation unto Gods purpose out of Love for Him.

A Pharisee is the one who preaches Holiness and separation from the world for five years and then does the opposite.

But didn’t Jesus eat with sinners?

Jesus ate with repenters. That’s why they came to eat with Jesus because they had actually repented from the sin. The Pharisees were the ones that called them sinners because of their social status not because of their fruits.

Read Luke 19, it was the Pharisees that called Zacchaeus a sinner… but Zacchaeus was the one who gave half his net worth to the poor in repentance and faith when he saw Jesus! He was not a sinner, he was a repenter, with real fruit of repentance in faith!

But what about evangelism?

Evangelism minus holiness is counterfeit evangelism.

Matthew 2315 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

You can travel all you want and spend money to reach an unbeliever, but if you are an actor, your disciples are double the child of hell than you. This is why talented actor/Pharisee based evangelism is useless.

Does holiness mean that you are mean and you can never associate with an unbeliever?

No. That’s ridiculous.
What it does mean is that you don’t follow you their ways you don’t do what they do and your ministry is set apart and separate from making covenants with unbelievers

The benefit of not being joined in partnership with unbelievers, and perfecting holiness in the fear of God, is a Father/Child relationship with God.

2 Corinthians 6

14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.

18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
7 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

When you think of fellowship, think of two people in the same boat, going the same direction, in the same ship, in the same team.

Holiness is being separate unto God from unbelievers, so that you can reach God, then reach unbelievers. If you compromise God’s obedience to reach unbelievers, you are a hypocrite and a Pharisee, and all your reaching people is utterly useless.

Question: which sin is worse? Natural adultery or spiritual adultery ?

Question: which sin is worse? Natural adultery or spiritual adultery?

Answer: both.

Natural adultery is easy to understand, so it hurts a few people, causes a few people to stumble and fall away from the faith, and it spreads to a few.

Spiritual adultery causes many to stumble, fall in sin and away from the faith, and hurts many people, and it spreads to many… Because very few people understand it.

Stop trickin on God!

Dogs Return to Their Vomit: When you Call to mind the place that you came out of, you have an opportunity to return

*[[Heb 11:15-16]] And truly, if they remembered, called to mind, and had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

Whose returning to the sin they came from… and who’s desiring a better, heavenly place?

You go where you want to go.

When you call to remembrance the place that you came out of, you have an opportunity to return.

*[[Pro 26:11]] KJV* As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly.

Real Christ followers are looking for He who makes All things New. We are eager for His Creative Spirit and for His Return.

Time to Turn

All the years christian hip hop and rhythm and praise have been out, we should have been created some new sounds and impacted the world, especially if we have the Creator inside…Instead we still following after the world, doing remixes and mixtapes, counterfeit evangelism, committing adultery, divorcing our wives and divorcing our Holy God. #killingidols.com #jugularcutministries #timetoturnaround
