TRUTH OVER LIES DAILY
Q: What does it mean to covet? I’m trying to understand deeper
A: To covet is to desire. But here are the three levels to help you understand deeper:
1. To desire (covet) is ok. It’s good to have a healthy desire for what God has given you using his grace.
Proverbs 18:1 Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.
Proverbs 21:20 There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up.
2. To desire (covet) what someone else has is sin (10th Commandment). (Exodus 20)
Exodus 20: 17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s.
3. To have a strong, excess, desire for more and more is idolatry (covetousness).
1 Timothy 6:9 But they that will [covet to] be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
Colossians 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
