John the Baptist wasn’t obscure or underprivileged. He was the son of a priest, was well known from birth, and was next in line for priestly authority.
Yet he chose to separate from his privilege and prepare the way for Jesus out in the wilderness. He laid the spiritual foundation for the kingdom of disciples that Jesus built. Once the foundation was laid, he was done.
Luke 7:28
For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
