REVENGE versus PROTECTION?

Q: I’ve always taught my kids that if somebody hits them, they should hit them back. I feel I’ve been totally WRONG ! It promotes a never-ending cycle of revenge, and *actually* increases their chances of harm.
Protection and payback ain’t the same.
What are your thoughts on this issue?
A: I totally agree with you…I don’t teach my children revenge, I teach them to protect themselves and to protect each other. If you teach revenge and “hit back” all the time they just end up acting foolish with no sense of good judgement.
I teach them to use their words first, and don’t return evil for evil. If it comes down to self protection or protecting their younger sibling that’s when they can use force. I try to Focus them on protection, not on revenge. Protection is mature. Revenge is childish.
